Carmen [collection] : opera in four acts / music by Georges Bizet ; words by H. Meilhac and L. Halévy ; adapted from the novel by Prosper Mérimée. 1870-1919.

Arranged in five groups: I. Scores (1). II. Vocal scores (30). III. Orchestra parts (85). IV. Promptbooks (5 in 7 vols.). V. Accompanying material (2). Production material for Bizet's "Carmen," composed in 1873-74 and first performed the following year in Paris at the Opéra-Comique. The full score, in German, was published by Choudens (Paris, 190?), but bears Peters Edition plate number 9028. The vocal scores include an English edition by Metzler (London, 187-?), an English/Italian edition by Ditson (Boston, c1879), a French/English edition by Schirmer (New York, c1895), and an Italian/German edition by Sonzogno (Milano, 191-?). Two of the Schirmer copies are labelled "Stage guide" and contain interleaved pages of handwritten stage directions and other annotations; several other copies are labelled "Director's Score" and are heavily annotated throughout. The orchestra parts occur as two sets. The first, consisting of 63 manuscript or holograph parts in Tams folders, most of which are heavily annotated, appears to be a complete set for full orchestra. Some parts are labelled "original condensed." The second set is incomplete and consists of 22 parts published by Choudens (Paris, n.d.). The promptbooks are all in English. Two manuscript copies are incomplete, one of which bears the name H. J. Matthews, Stage Manager, NY. A third promptbook, typescript with manuscript pages bound in, occurs as three separate volumes, and a fourth consists of printed text pasted into folios with handwritten stage directions. Of special note is the manuscript copy on ledger-sized paper labelled "Abbott Version," with the further annotation "as performed by the Emma Abbott Grand English Opera Co., New Orleans, 1880." A printed cast list for this performance is pasted in. The accompanying material consists of folded, hand-painted scene designs, one which is separate and the rest of which are sewn into a volume which also includes a manuscript scene plot and printed publicity material pasted in (Emma Abbott's Grand English Opera Co., 1880; Her Majesty's Opera Co. , Haverly's Theatre, 1879; and Her Majesty's Theatre, Haymarket, 1878.)
